CHAPTER 5

Sarah

I had no idea what I was supposed to wear to my first bar shift. I figured from the casual and dirty looking clothes that the owner had been wearing that jeans and a T-shirt would probably be okay. I pulled my long hair back into a high ponytail so that it wouldn’t get in my eyes and then looked at myself in the mirror.

I hadn’t slept much the night before. I’d been too worried about starting work and what was going to happen if I couldn’t afford to pay my dorm fees. I could see the broken sleep on my face. My normally tanned and healthy looking skin looked saggy and almost yellow. I frowned at my reflection in the mirror. The girl I was looking at didn’t look like the girl I remembered. She looked broken, small and tired.

I pulled out my makeup bag. I couldn’t start my first day of work looking so rough, even if I didn’t really have the energy to start coloring in my face. I pulled the mirror from the side and brought it over to my bed so that I could sit comfortably. I spent the next half an hour trying to cover the tiredness. When I’d finished, I almost looked like the girl who I remembered before all the drama in my life had started.

I looked at the clock and saw that I had to be setting off. I’d been given my first shift on a Saturday night. The bar owner said that way he’d be able to tell if I had what it took to work in his bar. I’d seen people working in bars in films before and it didn’t look that hard, so I figured I’d probably be all right.

I walked to the bar from campus. I’d set off a little early, so that I could take my time. I hadn’t left my dorm room since the day I’d managed to get the job and it was nice to get some fresh air. I had fully intended to go to class so that I could try and get back to some form of normality, but I’d woke up the day after I’d gotten the job and I’d just known that I wasn’t ready to face everybody yet.

The walk into town felt good on my legs and when I entered the bar I felt alert and awake. The dingy room didn’t look as though it had gotten any cleaner since I’d been in it, but it was reasonably quiet. I walked over to the bar to find out what they wanted me to do.

“So, you showed up then?” the bar owner asked as he took in my clean outfit. “Well, it’s going to be a busy night so you might want to go and familiarize yourself with everything we sell,” he said with a chuckle.

I nodded and noticed that he hadn’t changed his clothes since I’d been in. “Is everything in stock?” I asked him, as I took
